Landscape Character Assessment (LCA)

Landscape Character Assessment (LCA)

Landscape Character is defined as, “A distinct, recognisable and consistent pattern of elements in the landscape that makes one landscape different from another, rather than better or worse.”

Landscape Character Assessment is defined as, “the process of identifying and describing variation in the character of the landscape.” LCA seeks to identify and explain the unique combination of elements and features (characteristics) that make landscapes distinctive.

TRACE is experienced in assessing and mapping of character and scenic amenity as a base for land use planning to meet local government strategic planning needs. Mapping of landscape character types, areas and units (LCT, LCA, and LCU) provides a hierarchical process to identify landscape values and characteristics.

This process enables us to capture identity and ‘sense of place’ at both regional and local scales. It provides valuable outputs to be incorporated into planning schemes and policies. This knowledge also contributes to landscape and visual impact studies.
