Clause Studio

With the rise of extended lockdowns, teleworking, distance learning, greenfield development has the unique and unprecedented opportunity and freedom to be more innovative and forward-thinking. Clause studio speculated the future expansion of Melbourne into the northern growth corridor by interrogating and redefining the design prototype for greenfield development (Clause 56). The studio operated in three scales of thinking by moving back and forth between scales to create a meaningful link to reimagine future communities that are resilient to climate change, supportive of bio-diversity and respect the first nation values.

The studio reflected on a wide range of interdisciplinary design considerations. In Scale 1, the studio looked at opportunities to increase focus around centres (20-min neighbourhoods), reduce sprawl, prioritise bio-diversity through broadened bio-diversity corridors and consider wider interrelations to landscape values and sense of place. In Scale 2, the current Wallan South structure plan was interrogated by testing various formation and distribution of housing typologies, public and private uses and spaces, active and passive open spaces to achieve a landscape/amenity-led masterplan. In Scale 3, the detached housing prototype was redefined in more detail by integrating higher densities and typologies into shaping healthy, walkable, diverse and thriving neighbourhoods.

This video provides a quick overview of the studio aims and ambitions (balloting presentation).

We collaborate closely with the industry to speculate these possibilities. Recent lecture by Gerard McCormick (FAILA) to inform our studio (on 12/08/2021) :
